How do I join the chat?
First up, you will need an IRC Client to enable you to connect to our network. We have a web-based client available for you to use, but highly recommend using a standalone IRC client. The most popular ones are mIRC for Windows, X-Chat for Linux/Unix and IRCLE for Macintosh systems.

Installing mIRC:

  1. Download and install mIRC
  2. When you launch mIRC version 6.1 for the first time, you will see this screen:

  3. Click Continue
  4. You will be presented with this screen:

  5. Type your details into these fields. If you are concerned about your identity being made public, please use a fake name. By ticking the Invisible mode box, you hide your nickname from various lists (recommended).

At this time EYErc.net is not in the default IRC Network list, so you need to add it. Click the button to the right of this screen. You will see this screen:

  6. Click Add and you will see:
  7. Enter in these details:

    Description: Random EYErc.net Server
    IRC Server: irc.eyerc.net
    Port(s): 6667,6668,6669,7000
    Group: EYErc.net

Click Add (do not enter a password here)

(optional) You might like to repeat this process to add all current EYErc.net servers, and then be able to select which server you want to connect to:

    Description: EYErc.net - Adelaide, Australia
    IRC Server: koala.eyerc.net
    Port(s): 6667,6668,6669,7000
    Group: EYErc.net

  8. Click Connect to Server. Once connected, you will be prompted with a local list of favourite channels:

This list of channels is a standard list of common channels. Just because they are listed here does not mean they actually exist on our network. We recommend clearing this list out and adding only the ones you need. Do this by selecting the first channel in the list, and repeatedly click the delete button.

You can stop the favourites box from popping up each time by unticking the box at the bottom.

Firstly, let's add #Chat (the busiest chat room on the network at the time of writing).
  9. Click Add and you will see:

    Enter in these details:

    Channel: #Chat
    Password: (Leave this blank)
    Description: General Chat
    Networks: All Networks
    Click Ok

#Chat will now be listed, select it and click Join.

For a full list of active channels on our network, type /list in the status window once connected.

  10. Whilst you are connected to any of our IRC servers, the server will peroidically "ping" your IRC client to make sure your connection is still active.

By default, these ping?pong! messages appear in your status window. You can hide these by going to the Tools, Options menu and hiding the event as shown below (recommended):

  11. The next step is to register your nickname to prevent others from using it (highly recommended). Please see IRC Services help for how to do this. You must identify to your nickname at least once every 60 days otherwise it will be automatically de-registered.

IRC Services / Registration Services:

EYErc.net host IRC Services which allow users to register both nicknames and channels (chat rooms). These Services greatly enhance your IRC experience and turn a server into a home. To learn more about the Services we host, once you are connected to any EYErc.net server please type:

/HelpServ HELP

Important Note: Do not disclose your password(s) to anyone, including any member of EYErc.net staff. We will *not* ask you for your password. Please also be very careful not to identify or issue any command to any 'other' service. The only valid user services are: HelpServ, NickServ, ChanServ and MemoServ.

If you see or are contacted by any falsified services or if someone asks you for your password, please report them to an IRCop, Admin (find one by joining #OperHelp) or via e-mail to the EYErc.net Abuse Team.

Nickame Registration
Nickname Registration is handled by a feature of services called NickServ. We recommend users register their nickname to prevent others from using it. Once you register a nickname you identify for it with the password each time you connect.

Once you have registered your nickname you will then have the ability to send and recieve memos using MemoServ and also register channels using ChanServ. For more information, type: /NickServ HELP and for a list of commands, type: /NickServ HELP COMMANDS

Channel Registration
Channel registration is handled by a feature of services called ChanServ. This feature allows you to register, control and maintain vaious aspects of channels. For more information, type: /ChanServ HELP and for a list of commands, type: /ChanServ HELP COMMANDS

Memo Service
If you are using a registered nickname, you may send Memos (offline messages) to other registered users. For more information, type: /MemoServ HELP and for a list of commands, type: /MemoServ HELP COMMANDS

Someone keeps bugging me, can I ignore them?
Yes. There is an /ignore command. This command is very powerful and has many options. One of the most effective ways to ignore someone is to ignore their ident+hostname rather than their nickname. (So that it ignores the user even when they change nicknames) Use the below example as a guide, and for more detail, please have a look in the mIRC help file.

/ignore <Nickname> 3

Help, I've forgotten my password!
It happens to the best (and the rest) of us. If it is a nickname password you have forgotten, simply issue the following command, where <Nickname> is the nickname of the forgotten password.

/NickServ SENDPASS <Nickname>

Or, for a forgotten channel password, you would use ChanServ:

/ChanServ SENDPASS <#Channel>

Remember never to tell your password to anyone. EYErc.net staff will never ask you for your password.

I have a new e-mail address.
It is very important that the email address associated with your nickname remains accurate, otherwise you might run into trouble if you forget your password. Please update NickServ with any email address changes like so:

/NickServ SET EMAIL <E-mail address>

Why have I have been "Killed"?
To be killed is to have your connection to an IRC server forcibly closed by an IRCop or OperServ. This may happen to you if you are in serious breach of our acceptable usage policy (aup).

For further information, please ask for assistance in #OperHelp or e-mail kline@eyerc.net

What is an open proxy monitor?
To help protect our network from denial of service attacks and also to reduce the spreading of IRC-related viruses, EYErc.net operate a proxy monitor bot (BOPM) on each server.

Every user is scanned upon connection, ensuring they are not hosting any form of insecure proxy or are blacklisted in popular DNS-blacklists.
